Mike – the link to the Huge Collection of Free Microsoft eBooks you posted is throwing up an error. I checked the link I emailed you at it is working.
Mike – You asked about web-based repair ticketing system. For a very simple yet effective solution, I like OSTicket (http://osticket.com/)
I use it for my day job and on my consulting business website. I like that the user does not have to be registered to open a ticket (helpful for new customers)
I also looked at OTRS (http://www.otrs.com/en/) which is very robust and I believe has an iOS app to manage tickets. It was overkill for me though.

I believe the virus on the VAIO was the UKASH virus. The situation you describe sounded a lot like the video Carey made about virus removal.
