I’d like to mention two alternatives to Belarc, both of which run as executable files so there’s nothing to install:
* SIW (http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw.html)
* WinAudit (http://www.pxserver.com/WinAudit.htm)
They both provide detailed audits of your system, but WinAudit also outputs to .txt and .pdf files.
I’ve been using the SMC SMCHP1D-ETH (the 14 Mbps version) for a while in my apartment complex, and it works fairly reliably. The only problem I noticed was back in December – we determined that the signal was really hurt by the lights on ours and our neighbors’ Christmas trees. I do recommend it over wireless, though, even in apartment buildings, especially since so many wireless networks (sometimes poorly configured) can cause problems.
Also, in contrast to what you said on the podcast, the SMC adapters you referred to run at 85 megabits per second, not 85 megabytes per second. That’s quite a big difference.
