To get around the Firefox performance issues with extensions that I only use once and awhile, I have created several Firefox Profiles.
A Main profile, Web Developer profile, and a profile for Reviewing new extensions.

To Use Firefox profiles use the “-ProfileManager” command line option create a shortcut like this “\Firefox -ProfileManager”

Gmail made some really drastic changes about the same time FF 2.0.0.9 was released, and THAT is causing people terrible problems in FF. Any extensions that have to do with alerting to or managing GMail are probably thrashing, and that’s almost never a good thing.
