from the terminal:
$ sudo mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb
to make it permanent edit "/etc/fstab" and add:
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0

Tell Ubuntu NOT to grab your WM smartphone so VMWare can take it:
edit "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist" and add:
blacklist cdc_ether
blacklist rndis_host
